Welcome to the University of Colorado School of Medicine Department of Pathology!

The Department of Pathology at the University of Colorado has a proud and productive history, spanning over 130 years.  We are a bridge department within the School of Medicine, with diverse faculty focused on basic scientific research, patient care, and education.

The Department of Pathology has grown significantly over the past decade, to include nearly 100 full time faculty, 26 residents, 8 clinical fellows, and hundreds of staff....who work together to achieve our mission....to discover, to define and to transform.  We are an integral component of the CU School of Medicine, providing Pathology and Lab Medicine at four major hospitals in the Denver Metro area including: the University of Colorado Hospital, Children's Hospital Colorado, Denver Health Medical Center, and the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center.  We also own and operate two large referral laboratories, the Colorado Molecular Correlates Lab and the Colorado Genetics Laboratory.  As illustrated by the curious and iconic Denver Blue Bear, we embrace the values of scientific investigation, lifelong learning, and a balance of personal and professional values.

The Department employs world class researchers focused on mechanisms of carcinogenesis. These individuals are active participants in graduate and post graduate education associated with the Graduate School of CU. These scientists are also active participants in our clinical training programs, for residents and fellows in pathology and other disciplines.  Our clinicians exemplify dedication and selflessness, focusing on evidence based subspecialty practice to provide excellence in diagnostic medicine across a wide range of scientific subspecialties.  We have intentionally recruited heavily in molecular diagnostic and informatics expertise, to embrace the challenges of cutting edge research and personalized medicine.

University of Colorado health associated educational programs including the Department of Pathology are based at the Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC), located just northeast of downtown Denver. The University of Colorado Hospital and the Children's Hospital Colorado are co-located there as well, providing ready access to medical programs and patient care.  The Veterans Affairs Hospital is scheduled to open within the year on the AMC.  In addition to local access, the department has invested significantly in Telepathology and digital medicine for education and patient care.

Denver is a rapidly growing metropolis, with a vibrant young population (average age 32) and a zest for the outdoors. When they are not working, Pathology faculty and students hike 14,000 foot mountain peaks, bike, run, swim, ski, and camp their way through Colorado.  When our altitude is not enough, we send faculty and residents to a Global Health program providing free cancer screening and care for women in Peru.  We also serve our community by providing volunteer educators at local schools, and serving volunteer clinics with pathology diagnostics.

In summary, the department of Pathology is undergoing constant growth and evolving to meet the needs of our discipline and community.  We hope you will visit us in person, or virtually through our website as you are able.  We look forward to welcoming you to Colorado!

Sincerely yours,

Ann D. Thor, M.D.
