New TIPS One-Stop Resource Makes it Easy to Build Your Course in Canvas
Need to build your course in Canvas but you don’t know where to begin? Don’t worry…TIPS has your back!
Jill Giacomini | Division for Teaching Innovation and Program Strategy Mar 25, 2024Learning a new technology, especially one as integral as a learning management system (LMS), can feel a bit intimidating at first. It can be challenging to know where to start. Whether you're new to CU Denver, transitioning to online teaching, incorporating hybrid models, or enhancing your face-to-face courses, understanding and knowing how to use the technology tools available to you is crucial to effective teaching.
To meet this important need, TIPS has created a new resource designed specifically to help faculty learn the basics of Canvas called Getting Started in Canvas: Building Blocks for an Organized and Effective Course. This comprehensive tool is tailored to support instructors across various modalities, offering a wealth of information, tips, videos, and how-to guides. From organizing course materials to facilitating communication with students, managing assignments, and grading, this resource will help you to get started teaching with Canvas.
Flexibility is key in course development–there is no one-size-fits-all approach. This resource will help you to leverage the features available in Canvas, tailoring your course to meet the diverse learning needs of your students. Designed specifically to be easy to use, content topics are organized into several modules. If you are new to Canvas, you may want to start with the Instructor Checklists, Grading Resources, and the Canvas Quick Start Guide. If you are looking to build your knowledge, modules on using Canvas tools effectively, building inclusive courses, and integrating other technologies can help. As you explore the different topics, keep in mind that help is always available. The Getting Help module ensures that you can access additional assistance whenever needed.
While this introductory resource provides a solid foundation, the topics were specifically selected to get you started–it is not intended to be a comprehensive resource of everything there is to know about teaching with Canvas. Think of it as your launchpad, guiding you through the essentials while encouraging further exploration (when you are ready) through the extensive Canvas Instructor Guide.
If you are brand new to Canvas or simply looking to enhance your skills, check out this valuable new resource to find out how to connect with your students using this powerful tool!
