Join this round table discussion with a diverse panel featuring Chief Information Security Officer, David Capps; Security and Compliance AVC, Charlotte Russell; and Information Security Officers from across the CU campuses: Sarah Braun, Boulder; Brand Judy, System Admin; Sean Clark, Anschutz/Denver; and Neil Kautzner, UCCS.

Panelists will review top cyber threats, the current cybersecurity climate of the university, and then discuss and answer attendees’ questions. Everyone, across all campuses, is welcome to attend and ask their questions regarding the top cyber threats, ways the university is mitigating these threats, and how each individual can make an impact toward developing a more secure campus.

More and more, personal data is stored online. And, of course, anything online can be hacked, stolen, and leveraged to the rightful owner’s detriment. Unfortunately, that doesn’t just apply to your credit card information, but to your personal health data, financial information, and any data collected on you as you wander the internet, as well. All this information needs to be protected, and, the good news is, the Federal government has established standards for data protection for a variety of information classes. In healthcare, the standard is HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). In education, the standard is FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). For online credit card use, the standard is PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard). And there are others such as GDPR, CCPA, and GLBA that protect your data when being marketed to and when storing financial data online. Certainly, some of these acronyms ring a bell, but what do they really mean?

All these standards have an impact on your role as a consumer, a student, and as a member of the CU community. We have compiled a diverse panel of speakers, including experts in policy, law and technology, to help you understand all aspects of these data protection and data classification standards.
