Technical Requirements

Below is a list of basic computer system requirements to take CU Online courses through Canvas, our learning management system that delivers your course materials via your device. It is always recommended to use the most up-to-date versions and best connections available. Canvas will still run with the minimum specifications seen below, but you may experience slower loading times.

Screen Size

Canvas is best viewed at a minimum of 800x600, which is the average size of a notebook computer.

Operating system

  • Windows 7 and newer
  • Mac OSX 10.6 and newer
  • Chrome OS for Google Chromebooks (Note: Chromebooks do not support some software that may be required for online courses, such as Zoom web conferencing or publisher content that requires additional plugins)

Mobile operating system

  • iOS 7 and newer
  • Android 4.2 and newer

Computer Speed and Processor

  • iOS 7 and newer
  • Android 4.2 and newer

Internet Requirement and Speed

  • Students will need access to the internet for online courses.
  • High-speed internet, such as DSL or cable, is strongly recommended.
  • A minimum download speed of 1.5 Mbps which is commonly the speed associated with a basic DSL or a cellular/satellite connection. A faster connection, such as cable or fiber service, will further enhance your online experience. A Wi-Fi connection is generally acceptable yet is dependent upon one of the two services mentioned above.
  • Canvas can also accommodate low bandwidth environments at a minimum of 512kbps.

Screen Readers

  • Macintosh: VoiceOver (latest version for Safari)
  • PC: JAWS (latest version for Internet Explorer)
  • PC: NVDA (latest version for Firefox)
  • There is no screen reader support for Canvas in Chrome

Camera and Microphone

Many online courses require the use of a camera and microphone (for video conferences, discussion posts, etc.). Therefore, make sure you have both of these items readily available on your laptop, PC, or mobile device.

Flash Player

You will need Flash Player in order to record video; therefore it is recommended that you install this software. Google Chrome already has Flash Player installed and updates the software automatically, when necessary. If you use a different browser other than Chrome, you can visit the Adobe site for downloading instructions.
