IRC Task Force Update

On Friday, April 1st, the Provost’s IRC Task Force (IRCTF), chaired by Joann Brennan, Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Faculty Affairs, submitted our report and recommendations to Provost Nakuma for his review.  This unusually thorough investigation of current practices, policies and working conditions for IRC faculty on campus has resulted in a comprehensive series of action recommendations in support of our 2030 Strategic Plan—in particular, Goals Five and One: Best Place to Work & Becoming an Equity-Serving Institution.  While the IRCTF has satisfied the initial charge of the Provost, follow-up meetings have already been scheduled to discuss next steps.  UCDALI was significantly represented on the IRCTF in a variety of capacities, with contributions from Maryam Darbeheshti, Elizabeth Pugliano, Joan Bihun, Jim Lopresti, Vivian Shyu, Lee Potter and Eric Baker.

Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania, argues… that teaching has been ignored until relatively recently because it “has never been professionalized.”  “College teaching,” he writes, “is a highly public act that has remained mostly private.”  Read more at…
