Ceremony Details

Please Note: Applying to Graduate is a separate process from registering for the ceremony. Registration is required for participation in all commencement activities. Registration is conducted through the Marching Order website.
Graduates received an email on Tuesday, November 30 with information on what to expect on ceremony day.  Review the logistics on what to expect and how to prepare for commencement.

What to Expect

CU Denver's virtual commencement recognizes all doctoral, educational specialist, master's and bachelor's degree recipients. Below is a quick overview of the celebration options available to graduates this spring. We have answers to many Frequently Asked Questions and unanswered questions can be directed to commencement@ucdenver.edu.

Virtual Recognition Website

All graduates will be included in a virtual celebration website for fall 2021, which will include graduate-submitted photos and expressions of gratitude. Graduate submissions are due by 10:00 pm MST on Monday, November 1.

The ceremony website will be viewable at 9:00 am on Saturday, December 18. All the details about ceremony day will be available on the Commencement Homepage.

Commencement Ceremony

All graduates who would like to celebrate in person can join CU Denver's fall 2021 commencement ceremony on Saturday, December 18 at 9:00am. All graduates who would like to participate in the in-person recognition event, must register by 10:00 pm MST on Monday, November 1

Graduate names will be announced, diploma covers will be presented, and graduates will cross the stage to symbolize the completion of your studies at CU Denver and the beginning of your next phase of life. Professional photographers will be there to capture the moment.

We know that that crossing a stage and having great pictures are important to our graduates. So we’re also inviting anyone who graduated in 2020, when we had virtual-only ceremonies, to join the in-person celebration as well.

Guest tickets are required for attendance and are currently limited to 2 per graduate.  There is not a waiting list for unclaimed tickets.  The university will make a determination about increasing the number of guests per graduate by early November and next steps will be communicated at that time.

Bringing additional guests to the event could result in the graduate being denied to participate in the ceremony or cancellation of the event. The ceremony will be livestreamed and recorded for families, friends, and loved ones who can't attend to watch their graduate cross the stage live. All the details about viewing will be available on the Commencement Homepage.

University safety protocols will be enforced during the event. Participating in the ceremony will require all graduates to:

  • Wear a face covering at all times when inside the Convention Center (face shields are not permitted). Graduates can remove their mask briefly for one photo at the bottom of the stage ramp, but must immediately put it back on after.
  • Bring no more than two (2) guests to the event in order to abide by capacity requirements.
  • Adhere to physical distancing between individuals not in the same household/pod. Graduates will be sat together during the ceremony.

Regalia Rental

Cap & gown rental packages are available to order online and are required for participation in ceremony. Regalia is not required for virtual-only participants.  Orders can be shipped directly to graduate homes (for an additional fee) or picked up on campus. Caps and tassels may be kept as a keepsake, however gowns and hoods must be returned using the included shipping label. Regalia rental is a required second step of registered for the in person ceremony and must be completed before 10pm on Monday, November 1.

Herff Jones, CU Denver's commencement partner, also offers several options for purchasing announcements, diploma frames, class rings, souvenir tassels, and more.

The 2021 fall commencement program will be presented in a digital format and will be available for download in December on the commencement website.

Future In-Person Celebrations

Graduates at CU Denver can participate in any commencement ceremony following the completion of their degree. All graduates who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic can participate in any future in-person commencement ceremony once large gatherings are safe and permitted. 2020 or Spring 2021 graduates who wish to participate in this in-person ceremony can register by emailing commencement@ucdenver.edu for more information on next steps. Fall 2021 graduates can also elect to delay their participation until a future ceremony.
