Tom is a Professor of History and Director of Public History, Preservation and Colorado Studies at the University of Colorado Denver. Tom teaches Denver History, Colorado History, U.S. History, and Public History courses at UCD. He also teaches Western Art & Architecture, Historic Preservation, Mining & Railroads, National Parks, Heritage Tourism and other local and regional topics. In addition to teaching, Tom conducts tours of the highest state and the Mile High City for the Smithsonian Institution, the Colorado History Museum and others.

Tom directs the Certificate in Historic Preservation Program for History majors and directs the Public History and Preservation Program for the History Department at the University of Colorado Denver. He is a past chair of the Denver Landmark Preservation Commission. He serves on the National Register Review Board for Colorado and on the board of Colorado Historical Society. Known as "Dr. Colorado," Tom comments on historic preservation in his "Dr. Colorado" column for the Denver Post and his regular Channel 9 "Colorado & Company" and KEZW appearances.
