Dear CU Denver Students,

I’m thrilled to share some incredible (and transformative) news: The U.S. Department of Education has formally announced that CU Denver and CU Anschutz have been jointly designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI).

This means we’ve met the criteria of over 25% of full-time undergraduate students who identify as Hispanic or Latinx and have a high number of students who demonstrate financial need. We are the first research university in Colorado to attain this status. And this formal recognition marks a milestone in our journey to become a national model of inclusivity.

I can’t tell you how proud I am to be able to write you today with this announcement. Not only will this designation further support Latinx student services, but it will also enable us to invest in our entire student population by strengthening the infrastructure of our campus. It was just a year ago that we convened our Equity Task Force and four months ago that we released our 2030 Strategic Plan. Clearly, CU Denver is taking big and bold steps toward our goal of being the first equity-serving institution in the nation.

Your success and the success of future generations of Lynx guide this critical work. Because to become a true equity serving institution, we must create a learning environment where everyone feels like they belong and can succeed.

We’ll be celebrating our landmark designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution throughout the year. Stay tuned for more info to come!
