Chancellor's Communiqué

Tri-Institutional Gathering November 1, 10-30-2018

Dear CU Denver Community,

We are deeply saddened by the despicable attack motivated by hate this weekend at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. And we are alarmed that this tragedy took place in a broader context of other hate crimes and shootings across the country, including the mailed pipe bombs and shootings in Chicago and Kentucky.

On behalf of the University of Colorado Denver, I extend my heartfelt condolences to all who have been affected by these senseless acts of violence.

The CU Denver community is encouraged to attend a tri-institutional gathering in honor of the victims on Thursday, Nov. 1 from 12:30 to 2 P.M. at the Emmanuel Gallery on the Auraria campus. The event is being organized by the Student Affairs/Development and Inclusion and Diversity offices at CU Denver, MSU Denver, and CCD to remember the victims and show solidarity against hate and prejudice.

These tragic events remind me of the powerful words of Mother Teresa. “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.”

As we as a nation reflect on the recent rise of anti-Semitism and hateful rhetoric against those who may look, love, or pray differently than ourselves, we should turn inward to our own hearts to see how we can each make a difference.

CU Denver remains unwavering in our commitment to creating and maintaining an environment that is welcoming, safe, and inclusive for everyone. Our diversity -- in all its forms, including religious freedom -- is a core value of our campus culture.

Students who are experiencing distress and seeking support can contact the CARE team at 303-315-7306 or visit the CARE team's website to request help.

CU faculty, staff and student employees who need to talk to someone can contact the Real Help Hotline at (833) 533-CHAT (2428). It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and every call is free and confidential.

We grieve for the tragic loss of life this weekend and we stand united with all Americans from the impacted communities, inspired by their resilience, courage and kindness in the aftermath.

We join all members of the CU Denver community in the resolve to demonstrate by our actions toward each other, the lessons we teach and learn in our classrooms, and the scholarly work we do in our community and beyond that our shared humanity is stronger than the forces of evil that seek to destroy it.
