The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was authorized by the United States Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. The creation of this program pays tribute to the leadership, courage, and vision of Senator Goldwater and establishes in his name an endowed recognition program to foster and encourage excellence in natural science, mathematics, and engineering.
This merit-based scholarship is available for students entering their junior or senior year. Each school can nominate up to four students. 300 scholarships are available with approximately 1200 applicants each year.
Focus- Academic study and research contributors, students involved in mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering with preference given to students who are seeking advanced degrees
Criteria- Students who display outstanding academic performance, demonstration of potential and commitment to a research career in mathematics, natural sciences or engineering
Eligibility- U.S. citizen or permanent residents must have a GPA of 3.75 or higher and be in upper 4th quarter of their class.
Benefits- Up to $7,500/annually, juniors are eligible for two years while seniors are eligible for one year
Submission- Online application, two-page essay, three letters of reference, college transcripts, sophomores must submit HS transcripts
