Reporting Special Circumstance

Special circumstances impacting your family contribution and educational expenses could be evaluated on an individual student basis. You are required to submit appropriate documentation to support your appeal.

Additional documentation may be requested prior to the processing of the appeal. All appeal decisions are final. Please allow 6-8 weeks for the processing of appeals. The deadline to submit appeals is two months prior to the last day of classes in your academic year.

If you are a single parent or married with a working spouse, you may file an appeal to have child care costs incorporated as an addition to your budget. The University uses the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE) budget parameters for childcare expenses. The parameters are reviewed annually by the CDHE. Follow the instructions on the form carefully to avoid delay and return the completed form to the Financial Aid Office.

There are no specific funds set aside for this type of request. You may request a one-time budget increase during your enrollment at the University to allow for the purchase of a computer (including monitor and printer). Follow the instructions on the form carefully to avoid delay and return the completed form and supporting documentation to the Financial Aid Office.

Financial aid eligibility is based on the student's and parent's or spouse's previous year's income information. If you are classified as independent for financial aid purposes, family income includes your income and your spouse’s income, if you are married.

If you are classified as a dependent student for financial aid purposes, family income includes your and your parents' income. Dependent students who are orphans, wards of the court, or homeless will include only their income.

If there has been a decrease in your family income, then you may appeal to have us recalculate your eligibility for Federal Pell Grant and/or Federal Stafford Loan. Eligibility for other types of financial aid will remain based upon your previous year's income.

  • 2012-13 Reconsideration of Income for Dependent Student (Parent)
  • 2012-13 Reconsideration of Income for Student-Spouse

(2012-13 forms will be available in June 2012.)

CAUTION:

Income reduction appeals are an estimate of future earnings. Should your estimate be incorrect (that is, the student, spouse, or parent earned more than the projected amount,) you must report this immediately to the Financial Aid Office Appeals Committee. Failure to report these discrepancies may result in the reduction or cancellation of aid, and you will not be allowed to file future appeals, regardless of circumstances.

If you have unusual expenses that are greater than those of a typical student such as high medical costs, required equipment purchases for a specific class, or disability-related expenses not covered by other programs, you may appeal for an increase in your budget.

If you have additional questions about special circumstance, you may contact the Financial Aid Office:
