Civil Engineering
Ryan Marmet, a civil engineering student
from Denver, has interned with the City
and County of Denver Public Works
Department since 2007. The experience,
he says, has been invaluable.
“Every project I’ve had the privilege of
working on has emphasized a different
aspect of civil engineering. Our design
courses emphasize the benefits and
drawbacks to various approaches an
engineer might take in solving a problem—
as I’ve worked for the City and County of
Denver, I’ve been able to see these
principles in action, and I’ve been able to
witness firsthand the applications of
academic knowledge in civil engineering.
“I’ve gained priceless insight into the
challenges currently being faced by
practicing engineers, as well as the
innovative and ever-evolving solutions
that are most effective in dealing with
those issues.”
To students who are thinking about going
to college, Ryan offers this advice: “When
opportunity knocks in the form of an
internship, don’t ignore it. The knowledge
and experience you’ll gain will undoubtedly
benefit you now and throughout the rest
of your career.”
