First-Year Seminar

The First-Year Experience (FYE) is a comprehensive approach to ensure that first-year students at CU Denver make a successful transition to college.  To assist with this transition, the university offers the First-Year Seminar (FYS) program and numerous engagement activities. FYS courses are optional classes specially designed to assist first-year students in improving their retention, boosting their confidence, and facilitating the transition from high school to college. In tandem with taking an FYS course, first-year students participate in engagement activities such as academic skill workshops and campus social events. Such activities and experiences are an integral part of a successful transition to CU Denver.

Through participation in the First-Year Experience, CU Denver has the following primary goals for its first-year students:

  • Become actively engaged with the CU Denver community
  • Develop relationships with peers, faculty, and staff members
  • Demonstrate high levels of academic performance
  • Develop strong academic and professional skills that last a lifetime
