2023-2024 Annual Premium: $6,580 (paid as $2,742 for Fall 2023, $3,838 for Spring/Summer 2024, & $1,098 for Summer ONLY). This breaks down to about $549 per month when comparing to other plans. Dental and vision coverage included in these rates.

Student Health Insurance Plan Eligibility

All CU Anschutz Medical Campus students enrolled in a degree-seeking program and financial aid eligible certificate programs taking 1 or more credit hours are automatically enrolled into the student health insurance plan unless a waiver is submitted and approved by the stated deadline each semester. You WILL NOT have access to the waiver portal or insurance ID cards until you have registered.

You may access the waiver at https://www.studentenroll.anthem.com/school/cuanschutz during the waiver period by following the prompts to create an account or login. Once coverage is activated, you will have access to your insurance information on the 8/1/2023 effective date.

IMPORTANT: If you do not take action to waive your coverage prior to 9/7/2023, you will be remain enrolled in the student insurance plan. Your coverage will be retroactive to a 8/1/2023 start date, but your provider may not be able to verify coverage until after you have registered for classes and are added to the Anthem roster. The date you are registed for classes can vary by program.

Enrolling in the Student Health Insurance Plan

Students may experience a loss of health insurance coverage mid-semester for many reasons -- divorce, turning 26yo and aging out of a parent's plan, job loss, etc. We understand! If you experience a loss of coverage mid-semester after you have already waived the CU Anschutz Student Health Insurance Plan, you may elect into the student insurance for coveage beginning the first month within 30 days of losing your other coverage. For example, if you lose coverage 09/30, you can submit the QLE enrollment form between September 1 and October 31 to request coverage with an effective date of 10/01. For the Fall semester, you would only be billed for the remaining months of coverage - in this example, 3 months. You would then also be re-enrolled for Spring when you register for classes and for all future semester unless new waivers are submitted.

If you have experienced a Qualifying Life Event of losing other coverage, request enrollment using this form.

Students on an approved Leave of Absence are eligible to purchase and enroll into the CU Anschutz Medical Campus Student Health Insurance Plan for up to TWO consecutive semesters. Please email studentinsurance@cuanschutz.edu if this applies to you or if you have further questions regarding this special enrollment option.

While all eligible students are automatically enrolled in SHIP with coverage beginning either August 1 (Fall semesters) or January 1 (Spring semesters) by registering for classes, there is an administrative hold with Anthem Student Advantage until after the waiver portal closes each semester. During the enrollment/waiver period students can activate or waive coverage at any time during the waiver period. When you get to the waiver portal, simply select the “opt-in” option and follow the prompts to activate your coverage immediately. To avoid any technical issues, we recommend completing the enrollment with the Google Chrome browser or clearing your browser’s cookies/cache.

Waiving Student Health Insurance

All students enrolled in one or more hours in a degree-seeking or financial aid eligible certificate program are required to have health insurance. Therefore, all students taking one or more credit hours are automatically enrolled in and billed for the Student Health Insurance Plan. If you have a comparable insurance, you may qualify to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan.

You must have comparable coverage from another carrier in order to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan. That coverage must meet several requirements in order to be considered comparable. If your plan does not meet these requirements, your waiver request will be denied, and you will be enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan.

Waiver requests must be submitted no later than 10:00pm on the posted deadline date. Failure to meet the deadline will result in enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Plan and your account will be billed accordingly. If your waiver request is approved, the insurance charge will be removed from your account within 7 business days.

To determine if your health insurance plan qualifies to waive student health insurance, your current plan must meet both of the following requirements:

1. Does your plan have in-network non-emergent care providers in the Denver metropolitan area (OR, in your local area for online-only students)?

2. Does your plan meet minimum essential coverage as defined under the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?

This includes:

Out of Pocket Maximum is less than or equal to $9,450/single or $18,900/family
Plan covers mental health as any other illness
Preventive care covered at 100% with no cost to the insured
Plan covers pre-existing conditions
Plan covers prescriptions
Plan provides a 1095 B or C from indicating that you met the mandate for continuous coverage

The following types of health insurance do not qualify to opt-out of the University requirement:

Plans that only International Students can purchase
Travel Plans
Colorado Indigent Care Program (CICP)
Short Term Medical Plans (STM)
Injury Only Plans
Hospital Only Plans
Cancer Only Plans
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)
Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRAs) without an attached health insurance plan
