What is CARE?

The Campus Assessment, Response & Evaluation (CARE) Team was created to address the health and safety needs of students as well as the campus community. The purpose of the team is to assess whether individuals pose a risk to themselves or others and to intervene when necessary, and more generally, to identify and provide assistance to those in need. The team takes a preventative approach to risk assessment by offering resources, referrals, and support to both the concerning individual and those impacted by their behavior.

Mission:

The Campus Assessment, Response & Evaluation (CARE) Team is committed to improving campus safety and student success at both the CU Denver and CU Anschutz Medical Campus by proactively and collaboratively managing situations and individuals that pose, or may reasonably pose, a threat to the safety and well-being of the campus community. The team coordinates with students, faculty, and staff as well as concerned others, using objective and thoughtful approaches to identifying, assessing, and intervening with individuals of concern.

Goals:

The CARE Team strives to:

  • Provide early assistance to individuals in distress or at risk of harming themselves or others
  • Help prevent situations of concern from escalating
  • Ensure the wellbeing and safety of students, staff and the university community
  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administration, and concerned others
  • Educate the campus community about identifying concerning behaviors
  • Create a campus culture that fosters sharing concerns

Team Composition:

The team operates under the Division of Student Development and reports directly to the Dean of Students. Both CU Denver and CU Anschutz Medical Campus have established CARE Teams.
