Resume/Cover Letter Writing

How Do You Know If You Have a Good Targeted Resume?

Easy – Is your résumé generating interview opportunities for you? If so, then you know it is working. If not, then you may need to adjust your résumé’s content.

If your résumé is not working for you, call the Career Center at (303) 556-2250 to schedule an appointment to meet with a career advisor or visit the Career Center in Tivoli 267 during walk-in résumé review hours (please call the Career Center for walk-in review days and hours).

Cover Letters

Why do you need to have a cover letter? Do you even need one now-a-days? Many people have gotten away with not having to write a cover letter because not every employment listing requires one. In addition, writing a customized cover letter for each job you apply for can be a tedious and time-consuming process.

All things considered, it is still a good idea to write a cover letter. Why? Keep in mind that most of your competition isn’t writing a cover letter, so this is one additional way for you to stand-out above the crowd. You can also address things in your cover letter that you are not able to convey in your résumé (ex. Why are you interested in working for this employer?).

FAQ’s

Q: How long should my résumé be?
A:One page is ideal. If, however, you feel that important elements of your background can’t fit on a one-page résumé, then a two-page résumé is fine, but exceeding this is not advisable.

Q: What about fonts?

A: For résumés that are submitted online, sans serif fonts like Arial, Verdana, and Calibri are recommended. For printed résumés, serif fonts like Times New Roman and Georgia are good.
