What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?
If you have responded to the “Tell me about yourself” question as suggested above, you will probably not be asked to identify your greatest strengths, because you already have! Remember, the strengths you identify should be similar to the characteristics the employer is looking for in the ideal candidate. Be prepared to tell a little story that illustrates why the characteristic is truly one of your strengths.
In the case of identifying your greatest weakness, consider what employers are really looking for when they ask this question. Employers are looking for three things. First, they want to see if you realize that you aren’t perfect. Secondly, they are looking for honesty and genuineness. And third, they want to know how you deal with your “weakness”. Does this mean you have to reveal your deepest darkest flaw to an employer? Of course not!
What it does mean is that you need to anticipate this question and have an idea of what you want to say. The key in responding to this question is to show the employer that you are effectively managing the “weakness” so it will not be a liability for them. We suggest that you don’t even refer to it as a “weakness”, rather refer to something that has “challenged” you in the past. Come up with a short story to illustrate how you successfully manage this challenge so it isn’t a problem.
