Aurora LIGHTS Programs

For K-12 Students
For K-12 Students

Students from designated elementary, middle and high schools in the Aurora Public School District may participate in the Aurora LIGHTS K-12 programs. Programs include educational opportunities in the classroom during the regular school year, as well as extracurricular experiences after school, on Saturdays and during the summer hosted by Aurora LIGHTS partner organizations.




P-20 Health Sciences Pathway

Aurora LIGHTS serves as the première health sciences pathway program for Aurora Public Schools, which has enhanced its science curriculum by:

For K-12 Students
  • Providing interactive sessions in several elementary schools through partnerships with our Anschutz Medical Campus health professional schools.
  • Designating North Middle School as a health, science and technology campus.
  • Creating health science academies within Aurora Central and Hinkley High Schools.
  • Developing Aurora LIGHTS programs at William Smith High School and Pickens Technical College.

9th Grade Saturday Academy

The Aurora LIGHTS 9th Grade Saturday Academy, offered by Central Colorado AHEC in partnership with Aurora Public Schools, provides a unique learning environment on the Anschutz Medical Campus.  Thirty students from designated APS high schools have the opportunity to participate. Students earn a stipend when they attend 10 Saturday sessions and meet rigorous academic criteria that include healthcare career planning and hands-on science and math enrichment. Students meet health professionals, participate in activities simulating real clinical experiences, and perform dissections. 

Summer Health Institute

The Aurora LIGHTS Summer Institute, offered by Central Colorado AHEC in partnership with Aurora Public Schools, is a rigorous 6-week program. This includes four weeks of intensive math, science, writing, and healthcare career planning enrichment.The final two weeks is a residential experience that provides on-site health career learning experiences, job shadowing with healthcare providers at the Anschutz Medical Campus, Metro Community Provider Network(MCPN) and other community health care providers.

Summer Biomedical Research Internship

The Aurora LIGHTS Biomedical Research Internship offers an exciting opportunity for Aurora LIGHTS high school students to work elbow-to-elbow with biomedical researchers at the Anschutz Medical Campus. The six-week summer program is designed to expose high school students to cutting-edge biomedical techniques and earn a stipend if proficiency standards are met. This program is recommended to Aurora LIGHTS high school students who have successfully completed the Aurora LIGHTS Summer Health Institute.
