Anyone who has tried dodging traffic to cross Colfax near the Anschutz Medical Campus now can make that trip a safe, even leisurely, stroll. Last Friday night, the Fitzsimons Village Developer Corporex oversaw installation of an enclosed public pedestrian bridge connecting the Anschutz Medical Campus north of Colfax Avenue to the new Fitzsimons Village located on the south side.
It was no small feat to set the pre-made bridge in place. It took a lot of careful planning, and Corporex representatives coordinated the installation with the City of Aurora because traffic had to be rerouted during the work. Then, lifting the 163-foot, 300,000-pound steel truss required two cranes.
At each end of the fully-enclosed span are stairwells and elevators to accommodate patients, visitors, staff, faculty and students coming to campus. The new pedestrian walkway also provides a pathway from the campus to businesses south of Colfax such as restaurants and the 153-room Marriott Springhill Suites scheduled for completion this Spring.
The bridge was built by the Texas-based JCF Bridge Company.
