Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) now are available in all occupied University of Colorado buildings at the Anschutz Medical Campus as well as in the Denver Campus buildings east of Speer Boulevard. The university initiated this program as part of overall life safety in Facilities Management to provide access to life-saving tools for students, faculty, staff and visitors. This program meets all of the requirements of the Colorado State AED Statutes and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment regulations.
AEDs are located with prominent signage in the first floor main lobbies of our buildings -- one per building (see photo). However, since each building layout is different, you are encourage to take the time to look for the AED signs to confirm specific locations in the buildings in which you most often work or visit. There are 27 AED units located throughout university buildings on the Anschutz Medical Campus and three in Denver Campus buildings.
All AED units are in 'alarmed' cabinets. That means when the door is opened, a local alarm will sound and a light will flash at the AED cabinet. In addition, an alarm is automatically transmitted to University Police. The police will respond by sending officers, as well as call for paramedics. To avoid false alarms, please do not to tamper with these devices.
When needed and removed from the case for use, the AED also is programmed with a voice prompt to talk the user through an emergency. The AED will not defibrillate unless it senses a rhythm that can be converted with a shock, and the operator will still need to press a button on the front of the AED. Again, while this is happening, the device voice prompts the user.
The Office of Alumni Relations in conjunction with the Physical Therapy Program Alumni Association offers AED training and Basic Life Support CPR Certification Courses for alumni, faculty, staff, and students. Courses are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and are offered twice per month, four times per month during the summer months.
