Questions frequently asked by graduates

 Q: Do my guests need tickets for the ceremony?

No, tickets are not issued for commencement. The Colorado School of Public Health ceremony has a limit of four guests per graduate due to the venue capacity. All other ceremonies have no guest limits. Seating is first-come, first-served.3

 Q: Am I required to attend the ceremony?

Commencement is an optional celebration of the completion of your degree. Attendance is not mandatory.

 Q: I have submitted my diploma application. Do I still have to register for the ceremony?

​Yes, you must register for the ceremony as well as apply to graduate. Registering for the ceremony confirms your participation and reserves your official regalia to be worn in the ceremony.

 Q: When and where do I pick up my cap and gown?

​Graduates and faculty can pick up regalia on Wednesday, May 22 and Thursday, May 23 between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. in Ed 1 1500.

Regalia (hoods and gowns) must be returned to Ed 1 1500 no later than 2 p.m. on Friday to avoid charges. ​​


 Q: How do I get my diploma?

Diplomas may be given out only after the degree is awarded.  Degrees are awarded once all grades have been posted and the program has approved the awarding of the degree.  As long as there are no holds on the student’s account, diplomas may be picked up in the Office of the Registrar (Education II North, Room 3204) Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Please make sure to bring legal photo identification - credit cards are not a valid form of identification.

Please include a check or money order made out to 'University of Colorado' in the amount of $15 for addresses within the United States or a U.S. territory and $42 for addresses in Canada. Diplomas mailed within the United States are mailed Certified Mail which will require a signature upon receipt. Contact Barbara Sanchez at for the cost of mailing to other international destinations.

If a note does not contain a signature, the diploma cannot be released. On the request please include the graduate’s student identification number, printed mailing address, and name (in addition to the graduate’s signature), specify the type of degree that was awarded and when it was awarded.

 Q: I will have guests attending commencement who are elderly or need ADA assistance. What kind of accommodations are available?

 Q: Where can I park?

Free parking is available in all visitor lots on Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

     Q: How can I order graduation announcements?

    Graduation announcements, class rings and diploma frames are available through Herff Jones. A link will be added when commencement registration opens in mid-February.

     Q: Can I purchase regalia instead of renting it?
