Survival rates at CU Cancer Center beat national rates

In the five years since she was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer, Ellen Smith has traveled the globe, celebrated the births of four grandchildren and even married her best friend.
At the CU Cancer Center she found D. Ross Camidge, MD, PhD, who was doing a clinical trial for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. Smith was a match for the clinical trial and in July 2009 became one of the first people in the world to take crizotinib, an ALK inhibitor which is designed to block the gene that drives the lung cancer.
