“What first got me interested in CU Denver was its great pre-collegiate program for high school students,” says Omaird Ivonne Portillo, who grew up in Boulder, Colorado. Ivonne is a now political science major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a minor in business.
An interest in politics and with making a difference in her community has Ivonne’s vision firmly focused on continuing forward to graduate school. She wants to become a lawyer or a reporter. “Politics are all around us. I want to bring more awareness of important issues to help communities—you can make real changes in society through politics.”
Spanish is Ivonne’s first language, and she feels this will help expand her career options. She also thinks her professional path is more open because of her ability to design a customized degree program at CU Denver. “Multiple schools and colleges are a plus. The faculty clearly explained how to go about making my choices; they made it easy for me to decide.”
CU Denver turned out to be “just the right sized school.” Ivonne thoroughly enjoys the diverse student body and the bustling nearby city environment.
