CREATE YOUR OWN DEGREE
Originally, I thought I’d be a neo-natal nurse and I did part-time work at a local hospital in San Diego during high school.
I worked on restoring juvenile health care systems in Gulu, Uganda, during the summer. Everyone was focused on child soldiers, but we saw the need to improve the health care systems from 1926 that were still being used.
I was nervous about switching from nursing to public health, but the teachers and staff were honestly what made it work. My degree program functions under the disciplines of community health, communications, behavioral sciences and international political science. Especially interesting was learning how to write proposals for in-country interventions and infectious diseases. I learned how to take my idea of the world and put wings under it so it could fly.
