HEALTH CARE DIRECTION
Growing up in the Dominican Republic, I saw extremes of wealth and poverty, especially in the area of health care. I’m considering becoming a neurologist with the goal of establishing a network of hospitals in a third world country.
I was offered a scholarship to a well-known private college on the east coast, but UCD was high on my list. The pre-med program allows you to work with award-winning professors and researchers in programs ranging from biology to applied mathematics to biophysics. One of my outstanding moments is every time I get to work in the new Science Building at the University of Colorado Denver. I’ve seen professional labs that aren’t as well equipped.
I’m part of the Denver Bound and University Honors and Leadership (UHL) programs; the students and faculty have been a strong team for enhancing my educational experience. That’s what sets UCD apart—the kids are fun but are definitely driven and motivated in the education and career choices.
My classes have a range of interesting students: from first-time students who are recent high school graduates to experienced mid-life career changers. It ‘s a good mixture.
For medical school, the Anschutz Medical Campus would be my first choice—it’s the most funded school in the state for research. I attended a chancellor’s reception, met faculty members and was impressed by their credentials and experience.
New careers are constantly evolving in the health care field. You can work in an embassy to help establish quality health care overseas, be a fundraiser for a nonprofit health organization or travel internationally to educate people about the U.S. approach to health care. At UCD, they really help you explore your options.
Jump in with both feet. This campus has so much to offer and there are many programs that can help.
