When his professor told him about a potential internship with Warner Music Group, Zach Davenport jumped at the opportunity. From a previous internship with Sony Music in New York, he knew the experience would be invaluable for his music business studies—and he was right.
“It was an incredible experience for me and my career goals and aspirations. I met a ton of really valuable contacts that can help me further my career in the music industry. I also gained a lot of knowledge and experience about the industry that I can apply. And I applied a lot of the information I had learned (in class) about music marketing and networking directly to my internship.”
He also had a lot of fun. In addition to meeting famous bands like Linkin Park and The Submarines, Zach enjoyed setting up a contest in which winners got to meet the members of Surfer Blood before they played a show.
“The most valuable experience was when I helped out with the Joy Formidable Show in Denver. I met a ton of valuable contacts… and got a really good inside look at what it takes to be a tour manager and what the band goes through during a tour.”
Zach believes his internship experience will benefit his music-industry job search after graduation.
“Everyone has degrees now, so internships are the thing that will set you apart.”
