Shelby Shafto, Kevin Johnk, Tamara Lhungay, and Kyle Callahan, the 2011-2012 El Pomar scholars,
will participate in the El Pomar Foundation's
Student Leadership Experience (SLE) Program over the course of this academic year. They attended the first SLE weekend conference on October 15th and 16th. During the conference, which was held in Colorado Springs, the students volunteered at the Garden of the Gods, where they worked together to fix erosion problems caused by visitors to the park. They also explored various nonprofits in the city and learned about general nonprofit leadership, management, and organization.
The SLE scholars will also complete a year-long project together, which will center on the nonprofit Phoenix Multi Sport. Shelby says that "Phoenix Multi Sport focuses on helping drug users and alcoholics overcome their addiction and stay drug/alcohol free through the use of sports. Sports act as a great motivator because they give people a sense of community within a group that supports each member." The scholars will interview the leadership of the organization, volunteer with its members, and work to solve problems that it faces.
