Mercy Housing provides affordable living for migrant and refugee families throughout the United States. Furthermore, Mercy Housing also provides services and
connections in the community. The UHL program has set up an initiative with
Grace Apartments, which is located in east Denver. Grace Apartments currently
provides housing for 53 family units. Most of these families live as
multigenerational families. Of the migrants, 43% are from Burma, another 44%
are from Bhutan, also known as Nepal, and the remaining migrants are from East
Africa and Mexico. Grace Apartments provides after-school programs for the
children. These programs offer everything from homework help to anti-bullying
character building. Grace Apartments also helps out adults with ESL classes and
other services. Mercy Housing’s two main goals are Community Development and
Integration. They want the migrants to feel proud of where they come from and
where they live. Also, Grace Apartments wants to integrate these various
cultures and bring more awareness about the diversity of the area.
As
of right now, students are involved mainly with the after-school programs. In
the past UHL students have tutored kids, played soccer, taught dance, and even
provided skateboards for the kids. This year kids will continue to take part in
these activities and more.
