My name is Jennifer Mayo and not only am I the one in charge
of maintaining the website as the UHL student worker, I am also currently a
senior in the program. UHL is an honors program that incorporates a small
college feel within the diverse, large campus of UCDenver.
As a student, I’ve gotten to meet great professors who have
changed my career path and I have also participated in research with faculty.
I’m an English major so doing research seems strange, but I’ve been researching
literacy within unusual texts for the last year. Another nice thing about UHL
is meeting all the other students and making friends both in my cohort and
across the whole program. I have a coalition of underclassmen that want me to
flunk so I stay another year with them in college. Nothing says friendship like
friends trying to drag you down.
While UHL provides many opportunities and a lovely $2000 a
year scholarship, there’s also a huge focus on giving back. No, this doesn’t
mean you have to pay back the scholarship money – it means that we’re expected
to use this educational platform to make change in our community as well as succeed
in our professional lives. I recommend that you not only apply to this program,
but also use it to further your goals. The better we represent the program, the
better the program can provide for us.
