WELCOME

Dear Colleagues,

It is my privilege to welcome you to the Third Biennial L.S. Skaggs Biomedical Research Symposium sponsored by the schools and colleges of pharmacy at the University of Colorado, University of Arizona, University of California at San Diego, Idaho State University, University of Montana, University of Utah and The Scripps Research Institute in honor of Mr. L. S. “Sam” Skaggs – entrepreneur, philanthropist and humanitarian.

During most of the 20th century, the Skaggs name gained prominence on hundreds of storefronts throughout the United States. Mr. Skaggs will be forever known as the pioneer of the first successful combination food outlet and pharmacy that changed the way America was able to access medications and therapeutic advice. Through the years, Mr. Skaggs has demonstrated his willingness to share his good fortune, both personally and through The ALSAM Foundation, named in honor of him and his wife, Aline.  Mr. Skaggs and The ALSAM Foundation have given hundreds of millions of dollars to support research investigating diseases and effective therapies, as well as other worthwhile charities.

Through his philanthropy, Mr. Skaggs has created a legacy of supporting biomedical and pharmaceutical research that directly affects human health. He is known for his vision and commitment to supporting research that translates science into new medicines and new biomedical technologies. He also is recognized for creating opportunities for the underserved and underrepresented through his support of pharmacy students and the next generation of biomedical scientists.

With Mr. Skaggs’ many unique and important contributions in mind, we, the sponsoring institutions, take this opportunity to sincerely thank him for his support and to honor him for the enduring impact he has made on humankind. This symposium celebrates his charitable contributions, the benefits of which will last for generations to come through the students he has supported and the advances in therapies and biomedical technologies that his vision has engendered.

We warmly welcome you to the 2012 L.S. Skaggs Biomedical Research Symposium and invite you to join us in honoring Mr. L. S. “Sam” Skaggs.
