HISTORY OF PINNING

As a new graduate from the College of Nursing and as a new member of the nursing profession, you have the opportunity of carrying on the long-time tradition of wearing the official nursing pin. The tradition of the nursing pin and ceremonial pinning originated in the 1860s at the Nightingale School of Nursing at St. Thomas Hospital in London. The pinning tradition has been perceived as a very meaningful and important rite-of-passage. Your school pin serves as a reminder not only to yourselves but also to your patients of your desire, dedication, and commitment you have made to serve others. The nursing pin remains a symbolic medal of honor and a badge of courage.

The pinning of each College of Nursing graduate occurs at the College of Nursing Convocation. The pinning is done by faculty selected by the graduating class. Each graduate will receive a pin that is provided as a gift by the CU College of Nursing Alumni Association. This pin will be given to you at Convocation and is pictured on this page.

If you choose to purchase an official nursing pin offered by an outside vendor: Ted Spring will be on campus Wednesday, May 25 on the first day of Cap and Gown pick up from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. He will have a table in the foyer area by the west entrance of Ed 2 North (right across from where you pick up Caps and Gowns). Here is the form to print and complete to bring to Ted on December 18, or you can certainly mail it with payment prior to the Convocation.  Any questions regarding the official nursing pin may be directed to Ted at 303/688-6906.
