Dr. Corwin's primary research focus concerns the physiological basis of postpartum depression and postpartum fatigue. In particular, she is interested in better understanding the normal bidirectional relationship between the pro-inflammatory immune response and the stress response during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and how disruption in that relationship may contribute to the development of postpartum depression. In her research, Dr. Corwin measures pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and HPA axis hormones including cortisol, in pregnant and postpartum women, and compares these variables in women who do and do not receive a diagnosis of postpartum depression. Dr. Corwin is also interested in fatigue and depression in another vulnerable population; young women smokers.
