Clinical Simulation

Guidelines & FAQs for Simulation

The simulation team members are excited to work with you for your simulation experience. The goal of this simulation experience is to expose you to a patient in an acute care setting with medical and nursing diagnoses and interventions that you have learned about in the didactic portion of your course, as well as to build upon knowledge and experiences from previous courses, clinicals, and labs. You will be working in teams to accomplish the patient scenario you will be challenged with.

We are here to both facilitate and support your learning through the simulation experience. Simulation is a fun, engaging way to learn more about complex nursing care, and a great way to augment the clinical learning in your rotation.

Scheduling

To schedule your simulation you will utilize our electronic scheduling system (similar to scheduling an airline flight) – The scheduling instructions will help you through the process.

Remember you can only schedule during open scheduling. If you have any difficulty scheduling or have conflicts with your clinical placement, please contact Nicole Markoff.

Schedule Changes

After the scheduling period is closed you can not schedule or reschedule a simulation using the simulation scheduling program. If you have the need to change your scheduled simulation time after the time is confirmed, you will need to find a classmate who is willing to swap times. You will need to e-mail Nicole Markoff 3 days prior to your scheduled simulation. (This is similar to making a scheduling change as a nurse on a clinical unit.)

What if there is an emergency, and I can’t make my scheduled simulation time?

If there is a true emergency on the day of your simulation call the simulation suite at 303-724-4731. If no one answers, leave a message including your phone number. We will check the phone throughout the day. Please do not use this number other than on your scheduled day. The phone is not checked on a regular basis, making it not a reliable contact unless we are planning on being in the simulation area that day. Please do not attempt to contact simulation faculty at other contact numbers, as we will not be in our offices during the day of your simulation. Realize that this is similar to missing a clinical time and will be handled in the same manner by course faculty.

What do I need to wear?

You should be dressed ready for clinicals in your scrubs, according to college dress code. Bring items you would bring to your clinical setting (watch, stethoscope, etc.)

What time do I need to be there?

You will need to arrive to simulation at least 15 minutes prior to your start time. You will be given your scenario and patient chart and information at that time.

What do I need to bring?

Again, please bring any items you would bring to your clinicals, including a pen, a watch with a second hand, a stethoscope and a pen light. A pencil will also come in handy as our mannequins are all allergic to ink. We will have a drug book and calculator available for you.

Can I fail simulation?

While the purpose of this simulation is to provide you a learning opportunity and guided debriefing – It is absolutely essential to be present physically and engaged mentally as part of your overall clinical performance. We have the same expectations as we do of you in the clinical setting. The two main competencies we are looking for throughout this experience are professionalism and patient safety. If you are professional and safe, the rest we will teach you along the way. Please review the Simulation CPE for the outlined expected competencies. You can refer to your course syllabus for consequences related to the unsuccessful completion of a professional and safe clinical simulation experience. If we have concerns regarding your performance, we will speak to you immediately after debriefing and contact your course coordinator.

Where do I go for simulation?

You will be completing your simulation in ED 1 Building. The location of your simulation will be listed in the scheduling program and will be noted with your e-mail reminder. Med Surg I, Med Surg II, OB and PEDs simulations will be in the CON Simulation Lab on the 5th floor (north elevators) of ED 1. Public health simulations are held in CAPE on the 4th floor (south elevators) of ED 1. SIP simulations are held in both the CON and CAPE depending on the date. Please note where your simulation will be held when scheduling.

What do I need to do to prepare for simulation?

Being up-to-date with your course readings and content will be beneficial for the simulation experience. You will be caring for a patient as you would in a clinical setting. Your patient might require basic foundational skills, thus review of these might come in handy. If your course requires additional reading prior to simulation, these documents will be available to you via the “Required Documents” page on this site. Please make sure to view the video orientation to the simulation lab. It provides important information regarding the mannequin, supplies and equipment.
