Minimum Volume:

At least two (preferably four) dried blood spots applied to a specimen collection card (specimen collection cards are supplied by this laboratory).

Specimen Handling:

Each blood spot should be collected from free-flowing blood obtained by a heel stick, and applied to only one side of the filter paper. Each blood spot should be about 1.0 cm in diameter, and must soak completely through the specimen card filter paper (visible on both sides of the paper). Multiple applications of blood to a single spot should be avoided. After collection, the specimen should be allowed to dry at ambient temperature for about four hours (after drying, the card's protection flap be folded over the blood spots). Specimens cards should be protected from moisture, foods, and beverages before and after specimen collection. Specimen cards should be sent at ambient temperature: Domestic specimens can be mailed via the U.S. Postal Service (please affix adequate postage), and international specimens should be sent via a commercial shipping company (FedEx, DHL, TNT, etc.).
