Web Accessibility

""The Assistive Technology Partners website has been developed to meet or exceed existing web accessibility guidelines. Routinely, we make changes to improve the look, feel, and overall accessibility of our website. Our web development team is committed to being a model website for web accessibility.  If you experience any challenges in viewing our site, please contact our webmaster who will make every effort to ensure accessibility.

Unfortunately in today’s world, not every web site has been developed with web accessibility guidelines in mind. Many of these problems can be overcome by either: 1) selecting the right web browsers; 2) taking advantage of web browser accessibility features; or 3) downloading and installing web browsers “plug-ins” intended for improving web accessibility.

The accompanying web pages provide discussions of how to configure various web browser features such as vision aids. In addition, we provide a list of web links to web browser “plug-ins” that the members of Assistive Technology Partners have found to be valuable in overcoming poorly designed web sites.

What are web accessibility guidelines?

Web accessibility guidelines are a set of recommendations that help to make a website more accessible for people with disabilities. The W3C, or world wide web consortium, maintains web content accessibility guidelines(WCAG).

See the full version of the WCAG 2.0 guidelines.

There is also a quick reference of the WCAG 2.0 guidelines.

The WCAG 2.0 guidelines better reflect current technology, but many organizations and government institutions require adherence to Section 508 accessiblity standards.  See Section 508 guidelines(pdf).
