Why you chose the UCHSC Neuroscience Program:"I have always been interested in the nervous system, especially as important as it is in development to make the proper connections to become a fully functioning adult organism. This program has a very collaborative and supportive environment to be able to explore whatever areas of neuroscience my lab work might take me."

What lab you joined and why: "I joined the Artinger lab because of the wonderful basic science that can be done on zebrafish as a model system. Much of developmental research can also translate to how neurodegenerative disorders can be repaired, and so I am interested in the early cell fate decisions that make up the nervous system."
Short description of your project:"I study the fate decisions of neural crest cells and Rohon-Beard neurons as a model for cell specification. Neural crest cells originate at the dorsal spinal chord early in development and migrate away to populate different tissues of the adult organism including peripheral neurons, glia, and many other structures. Rohon-Beard neurons also arise from the dorsal spinal chord and reside in the central nervous system to relay mechanosensory information for the developing embryo. Since these cell types serve different nervous system functions but come from the same place, the molecules and cellular processes involved in each choice in cell fate have implications for both basic development and also stem-cell therapy of neural crest pathologies."
Where you attended undergrad and what your major/minor(s) were:"I attended University of Colorado Boulder. I graduated in 2004 with a BA in MCDB (molecular, cellular, and developmental biology) and Psychology, and a certificate in Neuroscience."
What you did (if anything) between undergrad and grad school:"I worked as a lab tech for two years at the National Institute of Science and Technology. I worked in a tissue engineering department and my lab focused on developing replacement cartilage for knee surgery, and measuring single cell forces involved in arterial muscle cells (for developing medical microdevices after heart damage)."
