Dr. Christiansen’s clinical activity centers on helping patients recover from activity limitations resulting from musculoskeletal problems. A specific emphasis of his clinical practice is on helping older adults who are experiencing limitations in physical activity due to lower body musculoskeletal problems. There is a significant amount of overlap between his direct patient care and clinical research interests.2
Christiansen (PI). Movement Strategies and Physical Activity after Dysvascular Amputation. Research Core Pilot Award (PM&R UCD) 07/01/14-06/30/15.The goals of this project are to: 1) identify compensatory movement strategies for participants with diabetes after unilateral transtibial amputation using instrumented movement analysis and 2) determine the correlations between asymmetry in movement and; gait speed, overall physical activity, and self-reported disability.
Mueller (PI), Christiansen (Scholar, Project PI). Collaborative-care rehabilitation to improve functional outcomes after dysvascular amputation K12 HD05593 09/01/13-08/31/15. The goals of this project are to: 1) determine if a collaborative-care, home-based rehabilitation program improves physical function for people recovering from dysvascular transtibial amputation and 2) determine if the program improves functional activity for daily living.
Christiansen (Co-Investigator), Schenkman (PI). Exploratory Study of Different Doses of Endurance Exercise in People with Parkinson Disease R01 NS074343 09/30/11-08/31/15. The aim of the study is to determine the futility or non-futility of conducting a Phase III randomized controlled trial to determine the effects of exercise on the progression of PD symptoms.

rehabilitation following dysvascular transtibial amputation. The Foundation for
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation 11/12-10/14 ($30,000). The goals
of this project are to: 1) examine common physical function measures and 2)
characterize standard of care rehabilitation for patients with diabetes
following dysvascular transtibial amputation.

Exploratory study of different doses of endurance exercise in people with Parkinson disease. NIH 1/12-1/15 ($3,000,000). The primary aim of this study is to test whether individuals with de novo Parkinson’s disease can achieve randomly assigned levels of mean exercise intensity (60-65% or 80-85% HRmax) and adhere to the exercise protocol.
Christiansen CL (PI). Student Perceptions of Classroom Response System use in a Doctor of Physical Therapy Curriculum. President’s Teaching Scholars Program 09/11-08/12 ($1500). The goals of this project were to: 1) determine DPT student perception of classroom response system use in the course DPTR5101-Movement Science I, and 2) determine if perceptions differ based on student learning styles, age, and sex.
Christiansen CL (PI). Improving Function after Total Knee Arthroplasty with Weight-Bearing Biofeedback. Foundation for Physical Therapy Research Grant 1/11-06/13 ($40,000). The major goals of this pilot study were to : 1) determine effects of the weight-bearing biofeedback intervention on WB asymmetry during sit-stand transitions and walking, 2) determine effects of the weight-bearing biofeedback intervention on functional activity performance, and 3) determine safety of the weight-bearing biofeedback intervention.
Christiansen CL (Co-PI), Stevens-Lapsley JE (Co-PI). Limb Loading Asymmetry with Total Knee Arthroplasty. Bob Doctor Memorial Research Award 1/09-6/12 ($8,000). The major goals of this pilot study were to 1) examine the presence of lower limb loading asymmetry during and 2) examine the relationship between limb loading asymmetry and both functional mobility and muscle strength.

The aim of the study was to determine whether targeted exercise intervention improves physical functional abilities in patients with mild to moderately severe Parkinson’s disease.
