Project Description

The goal of our work is to identify nuclear hormone receptors, transcription factors, and G protein coupled receptors that play a role on diabetic kidney disease, retinopathy, atherosclerosis and vascular calcification. Once these are identified we partner with biotech companies to develop and use ligands in animal models as well as cell culture models to determine if activation or inhibition of these specific pathways prevent the most disabling complications of diabetes. To date we have been able to identify at least 3 nuclear hormone receptors (farnesoid X receptor, liver X receptor, and vitamin D receptor), 2 transcription factors (sterol regulatory element binding proteins 1 and 2), and 1 G protein coupled receptor (TGR5) that possess these characteristics. Pharmaceutical companies are now developing these targets for interventional studies in human subjects with diabetes mellitus.
