My laboratory focuses on the role of hormone receptors such as estrogen, progesterone and androgen receptors in breast and gynecological cancers. We have found that microRNAs (which are small non-coding RNAs that bind to and influence what messenger RNAs get translated into protein) are very different in estrogen receptor positive versus negative breast and gynecological cancers.
These microRNAs affect tumor aggressiveness by controlling differentiation state, glucose uptake and fatty acid synthesis, and chemosensitivity.  In vivo, in mice, we are testing whether microRNA can be restored to ovarian cancer cells in mice to restore chemosensitivity to paclitaxel.
