Welcome SOM Class of 2017!
Letter from Dr. Jeremy Long (Track Director, LEADS Program)
Congratulations on your matriculation to the University of
Colorado, School of Medicine. You are
embarking on a challenging yet rewarding career which will position you to be a
part of transforming medical care in our country. You join future leaders across health
professions schools on one of the country’s most vibrant, cutting edge medical
In the LEADS track we are focused on the determinants of
health and what can be done to address them _before_ patients experience
deterioration of their health. The built
environment plays a major role in health and we see this play out in different
communities in disparate ways. As a
health care provider, you have the ability to be a part of long-lasting,
patient-focused, community-driven changes to health care. With the skills you learn in LEADS and in
your medical curriculum you can better understand causes of health disparities
and ways to ameliorate them.
We invite you to join us on a quest committed to health
equity. Through civic engagement,
strategic policy and political avenues, and community collaboration health
leaders are refusing to be stymied by the challenges of our current health care
system. We can teach you how to be a
leader in the movement for greater health equity. Through mentorship in course electives and
the Mentored Scholarly Activity we look forward to supporting you as you
undertake the challenge to address the needs of underserved populations.
We look forward to working with you!
