AAC & RCC Clerkship Grading


 

While many elements of the 8-week Adult Ambulatory Care and Rural & Community Care Blocks are integrated, you will receive a separate grade for each of the 4-week block rotations.

Please refer to the following information for AAC- and RCC-specific grades and the combined AAC-RCC Blocks' criteria for receiving a Passing, High Pass, or Honors grade.

Passing Grade

In order to achieve a "Passing" grade in this Clerkship, students must:

    1. Satisfactorily complete all course requirements above by the end of the block and complete course and faculty evaluations.
    2. Have satisfactory attendance and exhibit professional behavior throughout the block.
    3. Achieve a score on the written exam greater than two standard deviations below the mean for the exam in your block. Students scoring below this will have one opportunity to retake the exam.  If unsuccessful, the student will be assigned a PR (Pass with remediation), which will remain on your transcript.
    4. Meet clinical competency expectations in their Clinical Evaluation by their preceptor.  Students who perform below expectations will be discussed anonymously at the Block Directors meeting and if deemed to fail will be required to retake the block.

High Pass Grade

In order to achieve a “High Pass” grade in this Clerkship, students must:

    1. Satisfactorily complete all requirements for a passing grade above without remediation.
    2. Fully complete all assignments on time and demonstrates punctuality for course activities.
    3. Achieve an aggregate block score in the top 50% of your 8-week block.

Honors Grade

In order to achieve an "Honors" grade in this Clerkship, students must:

    1. Meet all requirements for a passing grade above without remediation.
    2. Fully complete all assignments on time and demonstrates punctuality for course activities.
    3. Achieve an aggregate Block score in the top 20% of grades in your block.
    4. Score above the mean on the multiple choice exam.

Appeals of your Block Grade

A student may appeal a final Block or Course grade on the grounds that:

    1. The methods or criteria for evaluating academic or clinical performance, as stated in the Block/Course syllabus, were not applied in determining the final grade, and/or
    2. The faculty applied the grading criteria unfairly.

If you wish to appeal, first review your exam, Standardized Patient tapes/checklists, assignments, and/or Preceptor evaluation. Using the clinical evaluation form, perform a self-evaluation.

    1. Then, any student wishing to appeal a grade must initiate the process within 30 calendar days of receiving the disputed grade. An appeal letter should be sent to the Block Director or Co-Directors identifying the Block and the grade being appealed, stating the reason(s) for the appeal, and specifying the requested change.

    2. The Block Director or Co-Directors will meet with the student to discuss the appeal within 15 calendar days of receipt of the appeal letter. Before the meeting, the student should provide the Block Director with copies of all materials pertinent to the appeal, such as the Block syllabus, papers, tests, write-ups, etc.

    3. If, after meeting with the student and consulting with faculty responsible for assigning the grade, the Block Director or Co-Directors determine that a change of grade is warranted, then the Block Director or Co-Directors will change the grade in a timely manner. If the Block Director or Co-Directors determine that a change of grade is not warranted, s/he must notify the student within 5 calendar days.

    4. The student may appeal the decision of the Block Director or Co-Directors to the Essentials Core Leader or the Clinical Core Leader by forwarding copies of all correspondence related to the appeal to the Core Leader within 7 calendar days of the Block Director’s ruling. The Core Leader, at his/her discretion, may meet with the student, faculty, and/or Block Director, before making a ruling.

    5. The student may make a final appeal to the Senior Associate Dean for Education, whose decision is final.
