Cadaver as First Teacher

Arts & Humanities

First-year medical students are invited to write papers for a Humanities Course about their experience in Dissection Lab. The following are three pieces chosen to represent the body of work.

Victoria Collins

Tori Collins grew up in South Dakota and received a BA in biology from the University of South Dakota where she also studied neuroscience for an MS degree before beginning medical school at CU.

Michael Frank

Mike Frank is originally from Hubertus, Wis., and is the third of five children. After receiving a BA in International Studies from Boston College, he explored several opportunities ranging from volunteering in a community development organization in El Salvador to serving as an Emergency Medical Technician in Boston to working on a farm in Massachusetts.
Outside of medical school, he enjoys reading Annie Dillard and Wendell Berry, good conversation, home brewing, gardening, running and extra long dinners.
He hopes to be a physician who works with the urban underserved.

Jeremy Hua

Jeremy Hua was born in Seattle and lived there for most of his life before attending the University of Washington.
After graduating with a degree in bioengineering, he took a year off to enjoy life without the burdens of school and obligations. He then worked in Bethesda, MD, for a year at the National Institutes of Health, where he did clinical research for the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences.
He moved to Denver two months ago and has fallen in love with the friendly people, the school, the gorgeous weather, and the care-free lifestyle.
Although creative outflow is not as regular of an occurrence for Jeremy as he would like it to be, he believes that writing can be a great way to express one’s thoughts and to stay engaged with the surrounding environment. It is one of his personal goals to keep an open-mind to the beauty and elegance of medicine even in the face of hardship and despair. Expressive writing, every once in a while, can do just that.
