CUSOM AME Teaching Certificate Program

This teaching skills program by the Academy of Medical Educators is designed for basic science and clinical teachers and fellows and senior residents who wish to improve their direct teaching skills.  The program consists of a required half-day workshop, participation in five additional workshops tailored to your areas of interest (two of which may be completed online), six direct teaching observations or a multi-station Observed Structure Teaching Evaluation (OSTE) and the development of a teaching portfolio.

Upon completion of this certificate program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe principles of effective teaching and learning
  • Improve their teaching skills in one or more of the following settings: clinical ward, outpatient, OR, lecture or small group
  • Provide feedback to learners using evidence-based principles
  • Develop a strategy for documenting their accomplishments in teaching to support promotion 


Selection Process: Applications due January 19, 2018
                           Notification by January 22, 2018

The online application includes:

  • Personal goals for the program and plan for anticipated course of independent study 
  • A description of current teaching roles and major anticipated changes in the next academic year
  • Self-perceived current strengths and weaknesses
  • Workshop interest and availability

Initial Half-Day Workshop on January 31, 2018 - 8:00am - 12:00pm (Mandatory)
  • Pre-workshop preparation will include online modules, preparation of personal program goals and preparation for developing a teaching statement
  • Required workshop on principles of teaching, development of goals and objectives, feedback and assessment and how to develop a teaching portfolio 


  • Selection of five workshops, two may be selected from on-line modules (lower box).  These include:

  • Teaching in the inpatient setting/bedside teaching

  • Teaching in the OR

  • The Struggling Learner
  • MiPLAN on being a better bedside teacher*
  • Standardized and simulated patients
  • The Art of the 10 Minute Talk
  • Teaching in small groups*
  • Public speaking and Power Point
  • Identification of the struggling learner*
  • Remediation of the struggling learner*

Direct Observation
  • Six Direct observations using iTeach forms available on-line or OSTE evaluation

Teaching Portfolio

  • Development and submission of a teaching portfolio that includes teaching philosophy, direct teaching efforts and Mentoring and Advising


Completion of the certificate and self-evaluation of achievement of pre-program goals
