Leadership in Educational Administration Program (LEAP)

​Housed in the Academy of Medical Educators, LEAP strives to develop a cadre of highly skilled educational leaders who will move education forward locally, nationally, and internationally. This program, combined with the existing faculty programs on campus, will position the CUSOM as a national leader in health professions education.

The next selection process will open in November 2017

Selection of participants will be by competitive application process including:
  • ​Requirements:
      • ​​​​​​​​​​​​Prior training in curriculum development and educational scholarship - can be completion of Teaching Scholars Program (TSP), Masters in Medical ducation, or comparable program or skill set
      • Commitment to attend and participate in all components of the progra
      • Commitment to complete a group capstone project as determined by LEAP participants and CUSOM leadership
  • Application Process—all applicants must provide the following documents:​​
      • ​​​​​​​​​​​​Online application that addresses the following questions
          • ​​​Briefly describe the range of responsibilities in your current position, including those activities, operations or functions for which you are directly responsible.
          • ​​​​​What are your specific 5-year career goals? Be as concrete as possible
          • ​How will participating in this program help you achieve these goals?
          • What is your personal philosophy or definition of leadership and how does it apply to your professional role?
          • Describe a professional situation in which you took a leadership role.
                1. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​In what ways were you effective?
                2. In what ways were you not effective?
                3. What did you learn from the experience?
      • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​A current Curriculum Vitae, highlighting your educational leadership experiences
      • Letter of support from your supervisor (e.g. Department Chair, Assistant/Associate Dean, or equivalent). This letter should include: 
                1. ​​​​Suitability of the applicant for future leadership roles, including leadership strengths and challenges
                2. ​​​Rationale for the applicant’s participation in LEAP
                3. ​​​Agreement for the applicant to attend all components of LEAP
                4. Agreement to support the applicant’s successful completion of LEAP including identification of an appropriate leadership mentor.​​​
  • ​​​​​​​​​Selection Process:
        • ​​​Candidates will be selected on a competitive basis, using the following criteria:
            • ​​​​Meets pre-requisite requirements
            • ​​​​Demonstrates commitment to the program
            • ​​​​Promise for future leadership potential
            • ​​​​​A committee consisting of senior education and campus leaders will select participants from the pool of candidates
  • Timeline:
        • ​​​Call for Applications—November 4, 2016
        • ​Applications due—December 16, 2016
        • ​Acceptances sent—January 15, 2017
        • ​Program Start—August 2017
            • ​​​​Intensive 4-day course—August 14-17, 2017
            • ​​​​Bi-Monthly workshops—1st and 3rd Monday of each month, 1:00pm-5:00pm
            • ​​​​​​​​Capstone Project Presentation—June 2018​​​

Program Objectives:
At the completion of this program, participants will be able to:​

      • ​​Develop effective leadership skills
            • ​​Explain their personality preferences and how this may impact their educational, management, and leadership style
            • ​Recognize their personal leadership strengths and weaknesses and develop strategies to continually grow and improve as a leader
            • ​Manage conflict and challenging interpersonal and group dynamics
            • ​Develop a personal vision and plan for personal career development
            • ​Describe common leadership models and philosophies
      • Develop fiduciary knowledge and skills
            • ​​​​Explain funds flow in an academic medical center and the impact that this has on the educational enterprise
            • ​​​​Develop and maintain a budget for educational programming
            • ​​​​Negotiate salary, responsibility, and oversight of budget
      • Effectively manage and lead a team
            • ​​​​Foster talent and innovation in faculty and employees
            • ​​​​Develop a vision and mission for educational programming
            • ​​​​Lead change to ensure effective implementation of a vision and mission
            • ​​​​Promote a sense of shared responsibility
            • ​​​​Demonstrate effective communication and meeting management strategies
            • ​​​​​Evaluate and increase the effectiveness of a team

Educational Strategy:
This will be a fully experiential and participatory program. This will be a one-year course. The conceptual framework follows the Constructive Learning Theory. Core content will be provided in certain domains. However, participants will also develop specific content based on their learning needs, professional experiences, communication styles, and personality profile. Instruction will occur using participatory methods including action research, dialogic pedagogy, and critical reflection.
  • Pre-Course Work (May/June):
      • ​​​Each participant will participate in a 360 evaluation
      • ​​​​Self-reflection narrative on personal leadership style, including strengths and weaknesses
      • ​​​​Other pre-course assessments
  • Intensive 4 day course (August 14 - 17, 2017):
      • ​​​​Participants will be required to attend the entire 4 day course (8:00am to 5:00pm)
  • Bi-monthly workshops (to be held the first and third Monday of each month from 1:00pm to 5:00pm). Workshops will include:
      • ​​​​Leadership Topics—we will be covering varying topics in leadership
      • ​​​​Journal Club—we will discuss relevant articles based on participant needs/interests and/or hot topics.
      • ​​​​Project Work—time will be allotted to facilitate project completion.
  • ​Capstone Project (June 2018)—ideas will be solicited from the Senior Associate Dean for Education, Senior Associate Deans group and Curriculum Deans.
      • ​​​​One project will be chosen by the participants to move forward.
      • ​​​​The Capstone be presented as a group to the appropriate committee level—e.g. CSC,  UME Dean’s group, GMEC, and/or Executive Committee
