Office of Professionalism

School of Medicine

This Office is available to all faculty, residents, fellows and students of the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

“Students” are defined broadly to include all learners - that is, medical students, graduate students, residents, clinical or post-doctoral fellows, or anyone associated with the School of Medicine - who are receiving educational instruction of any kind. Discussions within the Office are designed and expected to be confidential and private except in specific circumstances that will be explained to each visitor. All mediation is confidential under Colorado law, with limited exceptions.

The Office of Professionalism (Barry H. Rumack, MD) can assist in the resolution of: interpersonal disputes between faculty members; conflicts involving faculty, residents, fellows, students or administration; conflicts involving personnel matters (such as promotion, tenure or termination); or any other dispute or concern, such as bullying, abuse of power or mistreatment of any kind.  Medical students with disagreements related to promotion, grading or other academic matters, should contact the Office of Student Life.

The Office of Professionalism exists to provide faculty, residents, fellows and students a resource on campus to obtain fair and equitable treatment for all matters. Under appropriate circumstances, the office can serve as an advocate for fair and equitable treatment for faculty, residents, fellows and students and can facilitate safe reporting of mistreatment or abuse.

The Office is available to help faculty, residents, fellows and students with all issues and concerns and provides consultations, short-term coaching, counseling, referrals, alternative dispute resolution and facilitation.  The Office can assist faculty, residents, fellows, students and staff members in preparation for various meetings and conversations.

The services of the Office of Professionalism are provided free of charge.
