Surgical Outcomes and Applied Research (SOAR)

SOAR Mission

Surgical Outcomes and Applied Research (SOAR) is an ongoing collaboration between the Department of Surgery and the Colorado Health Outcomes Program (COHO). The goal of this collaboration is to facilitate the development of outcomes research by Department of Surgery faculty, including active efforts to secure grant funding for surgical outcomes research. This was begun as a two-year initiative starting in 2012, with support from the Department of Surgery.

COHO Mission

The core mission of COHO is to conduct and evaluate interventions that improve population health and the overall quality of healthcare. COHO conducts health services research, which is a multidisciplinary field that examines the quality, accessibility, delivery, costs, and outcomes of healthcare services. The intention of the research is defined most effectively as to manage, finance, and deliver high-quality healthcare; reduce medical errors; and improve patient safety.

COHO has a history of conducting studies in surgical outcomes under the direction of Drs. Henderson and Hammermeister. It served as the statistical coordinating center of the VA NSQIP from 2002-2008, and for the American College of Surgeons NSQIP from 2005-2010, with ongoing studies utilizing these databases.

SOAR involves collaboration on hypothesis-driven clinical research projects by the following COHO members and Department of Surgery faculty:
