The Cardiothoracic Surgery program is well known throughout the country. Clinical activity at the University of Colorado Hospital is increasing with the establishment of a general thoracic surgery section, the further development of an adult congenital heart disease clinic, the continued increase in cardiac transplantation activity, the development of a new acute revascularization protocol for myocardial infarction, and the increasing numbers of lung resections for tuberculosis, lung reduction procedures for COPD, and the development of the maze procedure for atrial fibrillation.
The cardiac transplant program, for neonates, infants, and children at The Children's Hospital is among the busiest in the country with 25-30 per year; and enhances our ability to care for children terminally ill with cardiac disease. A pediatric lung transplant program was also instituted in 1994.
