Description of Research

Dr. Sakai is an addiction psychiatrist who works clinically with youths with serious substance and conduct problems (most meet criteria for multiple substance use disorders and co-occurring conduct disorder) and his lab’s work focuses on better understanding the biological underpinnings of these disorders. In recent years Dr. Sakai has focused on traits such as behavioral disinhibition (BD) and callous-unemotionality (CU), developing approaches in the MRI to study decision making relative to these traits.

Dr. Sakai’s current major MRI study utilizes a behavioral paradigm related to callous-unemotional decision-making and compares three groups: adolescent patients with high BD but average CU, adolescent patients with high BD and high CU and controls with average BD and CU.
