Psychiatry Research Education Practicum (PREP)

​The 2013 Summer Undergraduate Research practicum is designed to introduce young people to the discipline of research as well as the profession of child and adolescent psychiatry by having them participate in research activities prior to their advancing to graduate school.

The goals of the program are to:

  • Provide students from diverse backgrounds who have an interest in the mental health profession with a meaningful clinical and/or translational research experience in the field of psychiatry. We hope that students can learn first-hand about the substance, the spirit, and the methodology of current scientific research in the field and to encourage them in their pursuit of advanced education.
  • Expose practicum students to the clinical programs at Children's Hospital Department of Psychiatry including the Inpatient Unit, Eating Disorders Unit, Neuropsychiatric Special Care program, Medical Day Treatment Program, Ponzio Creative Arts Therapy program and Intensive Outpatient services.
  • Advance faculty's clinical and translational research endeavors.

​Undergraduate students must meet the following criteria to be eligible:

  • 3rd and 4th year undergraduate students or recent graduates from an undergraduate program
  • Possess basic computer literacy skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal
  • Passion for the field of psychology or psychiatry
  • Individuals from groups under-represented in science are strongly encourage to apply (including from under-represented minorities, those with disabilities, and those from less advantaged economic backgrounds).
  • ​The total time commitment is 30 hours per week for ten weeks.
  • The 2013 Summer Practicum begins May 29th and ends on August 9th. The schedule will be flexible and based on the needs of the researchers and availability of the student.
  • In 2013 we will be accepting between 6 to 8 Practicum students.
  • Housing is NOT included in the program. Students are required to find and pay for their own living arrangements for the duration of this program. Parking is NOT included in the program. For individuals who wish to drive and park, Children's Hospital Colorado requires purchase of a parking pass at $14 per month. The cost of parking passes is NOT included in the program.

This is the first year that Practicum students will be given a stipend; each accepted student will be paid $2,400 for the10 week practicum. The stipend will be disbursed in two payments, one halfway through the summer (approximately June 28th) and the remaining amount will be given at the end of the practicum.
