5/1/2006-4/30/2010 R01 DA018679 (Davies, PI) NIH/NIDA Martial Arts as Early Intervention for Teen Drug Abuse   

This is a Stage 1A/1B behavioral therapies development grant with the primary aims of developing a manualized early intervention for adolescent substance abuse (based on traditional martial arts) and then conducting a pilot study in order to estimate the effect size of the intervention and provide information for estimating power for a larger randomized controlled trial. Role: Principal Investigator.

 

8/15/2008 - 6/30/2013 R01 DA022284 (Riggs, PI) NIH/NIDA Bupropion for ADHD in Adolescents with Substance Use Disorders

Randomized, placebo-controlled trial of bupropion + cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in adolescents with ADHD and nicotine and cannabis use. Specific aims are to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this low abuse potential medication on ADHD, nicotine dependence, and cannabis use disorders in adolescents receiving concurrent outpatient substance treatment (CBT). Role: Co-Investigator

Dr. Davies’ involvement with the Clinical Trials Network continues via a subaward arrangement with the

University of Cincinnati/ Ohio Valley Node. Dr. Davies serves as Co-Lead Investigator for the protocol: “A

Randomized Controlled Trial of Osmotic-Release Methylphenidate (OROS-MPH) for Attention Deficit

supported under this subaward. Role: Medical Co-Lead Investigator

 

9/30/2000-7/31/2007 R01 DA13176 (Riggs PI) NIH/NIDA Substance Dependent Teens: Impact of Treating Depression

Completed five-year placebo-controlled clinical trial assessing the impact of treatment of depression with fluoxetine + cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in adolescents with substance use disorders. This psychosocial treatment for substance use disorders was manualized and empirically supported.  Two administrative supplements were awarded by NIDA under the parent grant: 1) NIDA 3R01DA13176-02S1, investigated change in biomarkers (serotonin, cortisol, DHEA, testosterone) with treatment, and 2) NIDA 3R01DA13176-03S1, investigated the effect of a brief CBT interview on reducing HIV risk behaviors. Role: Co-Investigator
